January 2009
We begin every New Year with hopes of peace, health and prosperity and this is especially so in 2009. The concern about the economy locally and globally has dominated everyone's Christmas. I attended the annual Aberavon v. Neath Rugby match and the talk was more about jobs than about the game, and understandably so.
In late December as secretary of the Steel Union 'Community' group of MPs in Parliament I met with its General Secretary, Michael Leahy who briefed us on the present situation in the steel industry. I also spoke at the Welsh Grand Committee welcoming the approach of the unions, management and Government in working together through the Welsh Economic Summit, a model which is now being used in other parts of the UK. I urged all Parties to support this growing approach by Gordon Brown of making every effort to boost the economy through Government intervention and emphasising using the downturn to up-skill or re-train the workforce.
Whilst there are deep concerns for us locally about our manufacturing jobs because of their dominance in our economy - and I have also been discussing the present situation with many smaller companies - we must also recognise the effect the recession is having on the service sector and on shops such as Woolworths and less well known businesses. I have recently written to local businesses on behalf of the CBI Wales asking for their views on how best to tackle the crisis from their perspective. My impression is that there is widespread support for Gordon Brown's decisive action nationally and internationally.
The other massive challenge before us is the Israeli invasion of Gaza. I was one of the MP's from several Parties to call for a cease fire on the 31st December. I agree with our Government that the conflict in the Middle East can not be achieved by military means alone. Israel's breach of international humanitarian law by its grossly disproportionate military response must end along with the Hamas attacks on Israel. The failure of the US Government to call for a ceasefire has worsened the situation: the sooner President Bush is replaced by President Elect Obama the sooner we will get peace in the Middle East.
Constituents will have noticed in the local press the announcement of a major new wind energy scheme. 'Nuon Renewables' wishes to build scores of giant wind turbines including in the Afan Valley. I hope residents will avail themselves of the opportunity to learn more about these proposals and express their views at the drop-in events at Upper Afan Valley Sports Centre, Cymmer on January 31st at 11.30am to 8.30pm.
I was deeply saddened to hear the recent news of the death of twenty-five year old Matthew Mizen, a popular and talented wing with Cwmavon R.F.C and our local postman. This is a terrible loss to his family, friends and the local community. I am sure everyone will join me in extending our deepest condolences to Rhidian, Myra and the whole family.
