MP Welcomes Brown's last budget
23rd March 2007
Aberavon MP Dr Hywel Francis has welcomed Gordon Brown's 'outstanding' budget and called for Labour MPs to back him as Prime Minister when Tony Blair stands down this summer.
Dr Francis said,
'Gordon Brown's tenth budget was his best ever. It will be remembered as an outstanding 'families budget'. It confirms my belief that he has been a great Chancellor and will be an even greater Prime Minister when I am sure he will take over from Tony Blair this summer.
His announcements on public service spending were greatly welcomed with spending on education set to rise to its highest ever level. The child benefit and child credit announcements, as well as those on the National Minimum Wage and the Working Tax Credit will benefit many families.
But the announcement of cutting the basic rate of income tax by two pence from April 2008 was perhaps the most popular of all the new measures.'
