MP Hails Afan Valley as UK Bike Capital
9th September 2008
Dr Hywel Francis MP recently welcomed Wales Office Minister to the Afan Valley to discuss the important cycling advances made by the locality in recent years.
Dr Francis said,
"The Wales Office Minister, Mr Huw Irranca-Davies was very impressed with the way in which local communities have succeeded in developing the Afan Valley as a major cycling centre. I would consider the Afan Valley now to be the cycling capital of the UK, if not of Europe!"
Dr Francis added,
"The Minister was impressed in particular by the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre, the way in which the local community enterprises and the local authority worked effectively together and the way in which small businesses had developed Bed & Breakfast enterprises in the locality."
Following discussions with local representatives the Minister undertook to speak with Tessa Jowell MP the Olympics Minister to see whether the bid for Olympic mountain bike competitions could still be held in the area and whether any of the training by some of the teams could also be undertaken locally"
