25th March 2008
Dr Hywel Francis MP for Aberavon who was the first to sign the Charter with Council Leader Derek Vaughan said
" I am delighted to be amongst the first to sign this very important Charter for local communities.
" Neath Port Talbot Council has once again shown the way in Wales to improve the quality of life of its residents."
Local businesses and agencies, community organisations and trade unions will be asked to sign up to a new Clean Air Charter for the county borough.
Neath Port Talbot Council is determined to bring and maintain all areas of the county borough within the national standards of air quality.
The Charter will provide information on local air quality and ensure that the appropriate agencies respond quickly to complaints of instances of air pollution from the general public.
The Council and partner agencies will monitor some 50 sites continuously in the county borough.
Vigorous but fair action will be taken against any companies or individuals found to be operating in breach of regulations.
Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Councillor Derek Vaughan said the authority plans to invest in more high-tech equipment to improve data gathering.
" We are also putting measures in place to monitor air pollution from vehicle exhaust emissions on key routes in residential areas," he said.
Councillor Vaughan said the Charter aims to encourage people to change their behaviour and attitude towards pollution to improve air quality for future generations.
