Welsh MP honoured for Carers’ Week
9th March 2010
Aberavon MP Dr Hywel Francis has been honoured by being chosen one of three Parliamentary Ambassadors for Carers for 2010.
Dr Francis said,
‘I am delighted by this invitation which will involve responsibilities and duties inside and outside Parliament centring on Carers’ Week in June and later in the year.’
‘As the sponsor of the 2004 Cares Equal Opportunities Act, Chair of the All Party Carers Group and President of several local carers groups I have met with hundreds of carers every year since being elected to Parliament in 2001.’
‘Today I attended a round-table policy discussion led by HRH the Princess Royal on ‘building a society to care’. There are millions of relatives and friends who give up careers, hopes and a large part of their own lives to care. The discussion focused on the need to build a society that cares by giving better support to families and carers.’
‘I am keen that carers’ rights are discussed not only during the run-up to the General Election but also from the first days of the new Parliament.’
‘The biggest issues for me are respite care and a decent carers’ allowance, to address the real poverty which so many carers endure.’
