MP says Rail Access win is near
24th March 2010
Disability Rights Campaigner, Dr Hywel Francis, MP for Aberavon, believes his campaign for fair access to Port Talbot Railway Station is making good progress including improved short-term staff coverage to assist passengers across the rail bridge which has now been achieved.
Dr Francis said,
‘I have been informed by Arriva Trains Wales that they have implemented an improvement relating to my proposal for increased daily staff coverage, from 5.30 am to 11.00 pm, Monday to Friday to help people with disabilities, parents with children and babies in prams, along with the elderly who need help with suitcases.’
Dr Francis added,
‘I am hopeful that the bid by Welsh European Funding Office to bring about long-term improvements for Port Talbot Railway Station will be agreed very soon and I am given to understand the decision will be announced towards the end of the month.’
‘If we win it will be down to the combined effort of all the two thousand people who signed my petition along with Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council which put the bid to the Welsh European Funding Office, and most of all of course, the hard working local disability groups.’
‘I understand if this announcement is made very shortly, potentially work could begin sometime next year.’
