MP to speak on Human Rights
7th December 2011
Aberavon MP Dr Hywel Francis will speak this Friday at Ystradgynlais Miners’ Welfare Hall on Human Rights. The event begins at 6.45 pm and will include the showing of the film Invictus.
Dr Francis who is chair of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights said,
‘I cannot think of a more appropriate place to hold a human rights event than Ystradgynlais with its links with such great humanitarians as Menna Gallie, Josef Herman and Dai Dan Evans and such radical causes as protecting Basque refugees and the making of the anti-nazi film ‘The Silent Village’.
The local Labour Party is to be congratulated on organising the event to celebrate International Human Rights’ Day.
Notes:
Human Rights Day is celebrated
annually across the world on or around 10th December. The date was chosen
to honour the United Nations General
Assembly’s
adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights. The
formal establishment of Human Rights Day occurred at the 317th Plenary
Meeting of the General Assembly on 4 December 1950, when the General Assembly
declared
resolution 423(V), inviting all member states and any other interested
organizations to celebrate the day as they saw fit.
