Welsh MPs meet Welsh Secretary on Steel redundancies

Aberavon MP Dr Hywel Francis MP and Nia Griffith MP this evening led a delegation of cross –party Welsh steel constituency MPs in a meeting with Rt Hon David Jones, Secretary of State for Wales on the recently announced steel redundancies and the future of the industry in Wales.

After the meeting Hywel Francis and Nia Griffith issued the following statement,

‘We led this cross-party delegation of steel constituency MPs to discuss with the Welsh Secretary the present serious challenges facing the Welsh steel industry.’

‘We emphasized the problem of high energy costs faced by the British Steel industry and the need for a level playing field with competitors especially from Germany. We also raised the question of public procurement and local supply chains and the need to increase demand through projects in the construction and rail industries.

They added,

‘The Welsh Secretary confirmed that he always speaks up for Welsh industry in Cabinet, and readily agreed to have a meeting with representatives of local government, the private sector and trades unions across south west Wales in the New Year.’
