Aberavon MP salutes Lord Ashley’s life of service

Aberavon MP Dr Hywel Francis who worked closely with Lord Ashley for over a decade on the rights of the disabled and of carers mourns his passing.
Dr Francis said,
‘Lord Ashley who died at the age of 89 over the weekend was a lifelong Parliamentary champion for the disabled and of carers.’
‘We worked closely for over a decade particularly on my Carers (Equal Opportunities) Act which he successfully steered for me through the House of Lords.’
Dr Francis added,
‘Lord Ashley was a remarkable role model in that he overcame his deafness and became the outstanding champion of his generation in Parliament for the most vulnerable people in society.’
Dr Francis concluded,
‘I was delighted that he came to my constituency after the passing of my Act, to be our guest of honour at the Annual Aberavon Labour Party Dinner and was received by the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot at the time, Councillor Glyn Rawlings of Glyncorrwg’.
